Watch Out for Deer This Season!
Most car/deer related accidents happen in October, November and December!
Fall is the peak time of the year for deer/car accidents in Ontario. They commonly occur between dusk and dawn when the animals venture out to feed. Rural and suburban roads are of greatest risk, but these accidents can also occur in the more densely populated areas as well. The area around Flamborough and Hamilton escarpment is a natural habitat for many deer.
Damage from these accidents generally range between $2,000-$10,000.
Tips to Minimize the Risk of a Deer or Animal Collision
- Reduce speed in any situation with reduced visibility.
- Watch for shining eyes at the roadside
- Use high beams whenever possible and scan both sides of the road.
- Deer tend to fixate on headlights, so flashing them can often be enough for the animal to move.
- Don’t try to drive around the animals. Animal movements are unpredictable.
If you hit a deer report it to the local police or the Ministry of Natural Resources. Do not approach the animal as it could be dangerous.
